Live Migration of Critical On-Prem Infrastructure with Zero Impact

Redesigned and segmented a flat network while migrating core firewalls and protecting critical Nutanix, Exchange, and Active Directory systems with zero downtime.

    Business context

    The client operated an enterprise on-premises environment where core business operations relied on a Nutanix cluster, on-prem Microsoft Exchange, and Active Directory.

    Challenge

    The client's network had grown without a structured design. Wired users, Wi-Fi users, CCTV cameras, and access control systems all shared one flat network, and the existing firewall could no longer keep up. The biggest constraint was the client's core on-premises infrastructure: the Nutanix cluster hosting critical servers, the on-prem Microsoft Exchange email system, and the on-prem Active Directory. All three had to stay fully available throughout the project. Any disruption would have halted email, authentication, and core business operations.

    What we questioned

    How could an unsegmented flat network and legacy firewall be overhauled end-to-end without touching or interrupting production Nutanix workloads, mail flow, or enterprise authentication?

    TSE approach

    Redesign and restructure the entire network in carefully planned phases: assess the architecture from the ground up, map every dependency across Nutanix, Exchange, and Active Directory before making changes, and implement structured segmentation.

    Architecture / solution

    A segmented multi-tier network architecture with dedicated VLANs and access policies for wired and wireless users, isolated security device VLANs for CCTV and access control, resilient inter-VLAN routing, and next-generation firewall policies.

    Implementation

    Kept Nutanix on its existing network to prevent workload interruption, migrated from the legacy firewall to a high-capacity next-generation firewall with minimal downtime, carried over all policies, and validated AD and Exchange connectivity continuously.

    Business outcome

    A fully redesigned, structured, and well-documented network delivered with zero downtime for Nutanix, Exchange, and Active Directory. Email and authentication ran uninterrupted, and security devices now operate on isolated segments.

    What it enabled

    Wired users, Wi-Fi users, cameras, and access control run on separate, secure segments with reliable inter-VLAN routing, making the network simpler to manage, secure, and ready to scale.
